Bifold doors in the office before update

The client wished to keep the larger pieces of furniture in this den/office combo but recognized that there was much room for improvement. We started with the fireplace. Brass framing was replaced with more-masculine matte black, while the brass sconces were retired in favor of a custom glass variety based on the room’s palette. The photo above the hearth was re-framed. Chairs bearing patchwork fabric and upward-curving backs were reshaped and reupholstered in soft velour, adding coziness, per the client’s specification, to the manly, contemporary character of the space.

On the other side of the room, a bi-fold door was replaced with a custom model featuring art glass mirroring the style of the new sconces. Glass colors were chosen to tie in the adjoining office space.

The office space was set apart by new paint, and the floor was refinished to remove an unsightly spot. The desk chair was replaced with a fully adjustable Aeron. A runner cleans up the furniture along the wall and adds color and texture. The director’s chair was swapped for a vintage Aalto model. This, along with the new magazine rack, keeps the area looking stylish and works with the existing drop-leaf table, retained per client’s request.

Lastly, rust-colored wooden blinds were substituted for the white window treatments, bringing welcome warmth to the entire den/office space.
