Living Room

Before

This bachelor wished to update his monochromatic living room and adjoining hallway/storage area. He wanted to preserve the paneling and carpet, as well as some items of sentimental value, such as the decoupage end table and Beatles needlepoint.

The sofas were easily transformed with velour upholstery. Accent pillows provide color and texture. The corner suite, meanwhile, has a new look that includes a very inexpensive table from Pier 1. Two paintings, one contemporary and one from the ’60s, serve as unifying elements, along with several pieces of vintage pottery. In place of the candle originally gracing the end table, the client now enjoys a cool, vintage table lamp that works well with the retro feel of the room and imparts flattering mood lighting for intimate entertaining.

Wooden bookshelves were covered with black lacquer to further relieve the visual monotony. The client preferred to leave the room open rather than add a coffee table, but when he entertains, he puts low, sleek, collapsible tray tables in front of each sofa for drinks and snacks.
